I'm trying to use an old PIC-MCP that I have.  It powers up fine, and uses a COM port.  I'm at a loss on where to go from here.  Thank you in advance.

Well what is the problem exactly? If you use old version of MPLAB (like 8.92) it should still work. You can find old versions of MPLAB at the archives in their web-site (just search online for "MPLAB archives").
